距离上次我发布"全国电子"的想法已有一段时日。最近在上的COB300课,是一个涉及财务、管理、市场、运营的综合商业课。虽然每天要上的课和作业量让我忍不住喊MDGB,不过这两星期以来,感觉还是满有收获的,对商业也有了更多的想法,吹牛也感觉比以前有底气得多。
这次带来的是一个跟我"全国电子"想法很相近的公司,newegg.com。无巧不成书,这家公司是由三个华人在硅谷创办(创始人Fred Chang,台湾人,之前拥有一家电脑销售公司;Ken Lam from Hongkong,程序员;Howord Tong American-Born-Chinese,工程师)。跟我的想法简直太相近了。但是比我粗略的只搞低价的做法高明许多,很多地方也给我提供了思路。可以看到,它很多方面都有模仿Amazon,吸收了Amazon成功的秘诀:customer service。
本质上和"全国电子"是竞争者,都是网上卖电脑产品的。
下面是我Google而来对newegg.com的一些总结。

Within in just 5 year, it has vaulted to the No. 2 spot on the Business Journal’s list of largest minority-owned businesses with 2005 revenue of about $1.3 billion, up 30 percent from the year before. It’s revenue in 2006 is 1.5 billion.
1. Target consumers:do-it-yourselfer, hard-core gamer, student, stay-at-home parent, small to medium-sized business, IT professional, reseller or anyone desiring a comprehensive digital lifestyle (mostly tech-savvy geek)
2. What they sell: computer components(70% of revenue), consumer electronics, video game consoles, digital cameras, etc.
3. Features:
- "Lightning shipping" (shipped in two business days)
- Specific target market/demographic: young, tech savvy person.
- Not the cheapest, but differentiating themselves by selling the latest and greatest, cutting-edge products & great customer service. (also reason why their consumers have enough purchasing power; they are high-end consumers among tech geeks. )
- Customer service: 200 reps manning toll-free phone lines, live-chat, 20 customer service agents available on IM. They value customer relationships; more focusing on making current customers feel good than drawing new customers. 80% of sales are repeat orders.
- Great in logistics; warehousing & packaging system which enable them to deliver order fast and leads to great customer service("top class").
4. Some Facts: its facilities(warehouse) now totaled 5 locations strategically placed across the U.S. and a combined total of over 1 million square feet(96,100 square meter, avg. 19,200 square meter per location; size of a soccer field).
Additional thought: Computer products & consumer electronics industry has great turnover as technology is advancing so fast, which means many new products will become obsolete quickly in one or two years or so. Focusing on latest & greatest products, Newegg.com is able to catch the the trend in the industry. They do not have everything, neither do they sell at the lowest price, but they differentiate themselves by selling the latest & providing great service, which means a growth to a 1.5 billion revenue.
